Arrived in Sydney

Sunday, June 14

Arrival in Sydney!  We are staying downtown tonight.  Here is a morning view of the ANZAC war memorial from our hotel window at the south end of Hyde Park.

After a walk in the park, on the northern end we see the Archibald fountain.  Apollo presides.  Lots of Greek semiotics here; Eitan explains it all to me.

Next over to the Westfield Mall, one of downtown Sydney’s many megamalls.  We dine at a specialty ramen restaurant.

The Sydney Hospital is the oldest in Australia, and is renowned for many accomplishments.  Including the wild boar statue Il Porcellino, whose nose is polished by the many who rub it to bring them luck, or (like Eitan) just to take a nice picture.

Then we head up to the iconic Sydney Opera House.  We take a stroll around the building.

Good night, Hyde Park.

  2. You bet he did! It's the busiest "rub a statue" attraction in Sydney. Every few minutes some other random tourist touches that boar's nose to take a picture. The fountain should be spouting disinfectant, not water.
